About this retreat

Join us in an 8 day / 7 night retreat in Ubud, the healing, spiritual, artistic and cultural centre of Bali. We offer a personal journey of healing and self awareness. Guided by Martine Coates (McDougall), an accredited Mental Health practitioner, highly skilled Trauma therapist, Senior Yoga teacher and accredited Trauma Centre Trauma Sensitive Yoga Facilitator and Trainer (TC-TSY).

This retreat offers the opportunity to both relax and immerse yourself in all that ubud has to offer, and to take the unique opportunity to focus of the aspects of your ‘self’ that are holding you back from living your best and most fulfilled life. This retreat offers a combination of psychotherapy, the ancient wisdom practices of Yoga and the neuroscience of trauma for comprehensive and systemic change.

Over the years in her practice as a Trauma Therapy Specialist, Martine’s clients have consistently requested if there are opportunities to “dive deeper in a more intensive therapy environment”. Creating new neural networks to re-wire a stressed brain is greatly enhanced by longer periods of time, repetition, creating awareness and intention and being in community, making this retreat a wonderful healing and brain changing opportunity.

A powerful aspect of a therapy retreat is the focused, sustained time and effort devoted to your goal. Our Therapy retreats combine a unique combination of conventional talk therapy with more holistic, somatic evidence based therapies such as Trauma Centre Trauma Sensitive Yoga, Yoga for Anxiety & Depression, Breath work, Sound Healing and Qigong in a safe space. This combination has made Martine a highly successful and sought-after therapist.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • No, our retreats are not covered by insurance. We can offer payment plans, as long as the payment is made in full prior to the retreat date

  • The retreats are located in Ubud, Bali. the locations are hand picked by us to ensure your privacy, comfort and safety.

  • Each person is treated according to what they are presenting with and what they would like to focus on during the therapy retreat. How we experience trauma is dependent on our attachment style and our personality and how safe we have felt to communicate our distress to others. This retreat offers either a start point or a safe space to continue the work you may have already started. Below are some problems that can be addressed during this retreat much more quickly and effectively than in weekly counseling sessions:

    Depression

    Anxiety

    PTSD and Complex Trauma

    Low Self-Esteem

    Chronic Stress and Burnout

  • In order for the retreat to be a useful and worthwhile experience we are unable to do trauma focused therapy when participants have certain active conditions that limit our ability to do meaningful trauma work with them. If a person is struggling with suicidal ideation or addiction deep trauma processing can be counterproductive and potentially dangerous. Please note that these limitations are not permanent. When the situation calms enough that they become more stable, a retreat can address the root cause of these emotional and behavioural problems.

    ACTIVELY CONSIDERING SUICIDE

When actively suicidal clients require safety and containment, in an environment that can support the possible risk. Our retreats provide limited crisis management and clients that are actively suicidal are not encouraged to travel overseas, away from thier usual treatment team and hospital facilities.

    ACTIVE ADDICTION

We request that retreat participants abstain from substance usage 2 days prior and throughout the course of the retreat. People who are suffering from active addiction should seek the support of a detox center or substance abuse counselor before attending a retreat.

  • The cost of this retreat differs from a general holiday / yoga retreat in Bali. This is a unique retreat due to the expertise of the retreat facilitator and the time doing intensive therapy.

An intensive therapy retreat provides therapy without the distractions of daily life.

The retreat environment provides the privacy and space for you to process the daily therapy sessions and the environment is geared towards providing you with a supportive, inclusive therapy experience.

  • No, the yoga we practice is therapeutic yoga and is not based on technique or ability.

After the retreat

After the retreat, participants will be offered the opportunity to continue the individual and / or group therapy work via zoom (fees apply).

  • Opportunities to continue to therapy 1:1 online

  • Group yoga therapy livestream

  • Join our Soul Immersion retreats to continue your journey.

  • Become a member of Thera community. A private online community that is for all Thera clients to continue on their Journey.

Meet Martine….

This is much more than a retreat:

  • You will be offered an experiential process, encompassing both individual therapy and group yoga therapy and a variety of local excursions and experiences.

  • Somatic embodiment and healing practices. Martine is an accredited and highly acclaimed teacher and Professional trainer of Yoga for Embodiment and Healing, which offers evidence based and well researched clinical somatic treatments for Trauma. Bessel van der Kolk (researcher of TCTSY) states:

“It is essential to incorporate somatic practices if you want to facilitate deep healing in yourself or your clients”

  • Small Group numbers -This is to allow each participant an optimal amount of time in therapy and to promote a small and safe group experience.

  • The retreat environment offers a healing space, located within the heart of the jungle and rice fields with plenty of space and time for reflection and time out.

  • An invitation to attend a traditional Balinese blessing.

  • An invitation to meet a Balinese Healer.

  • An invitation to join daily morning walk tours, bike rides, engage in optional tours or visit Ubud Centre.

  • You will be immersed in the magic of Bali, with it’s simple life, daily rituals and devotions, spiritual practices and open- hearted generosity.

What we treat:

Our Holistic intensive therapy programs are individually crafted and support a wide range of emotional, relational and psychological issues. We specialise in supporting the Improvement of Psychological and relational well being and improving the symptoms of burnout, exhaustion, lack of motivation and drive.

Therapy Retreats are offered to individuals, couples and families.

Retreats can be booked privately by a family group, a couple, friend group or workplace group.

Our ability to do meaningful Trauma work with someone is restricted by certain active conditions.  If a person is actively suicidal or unable to guarantee their safety or compromised by drugs and/or alcohol Trauma processing can be counter productive and possibly further compromise a clients mental state.

There is no capacity to manage risk or a mental health crisis, therefore it is very important to consider suitability, perhaps discussing with any current support network or providers prior to making a booking. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you would like to discuss your current suitability. The opportunity to bring a support person is available and can be discussed on a case by case basis.

It may seem hard to believe that unburdening could be this simple - but things that have plagued you your whole life could be lifted just by looking at them. In many cases it is that simple, but just because it is simple, does not mean it’s easy.
— Dick Schwartz,Internal Family Systems Founder
